Long ago, lived the Labadings.

For hundreds of thousands of years, the Labadings lived with laid-back ways,
at the base of a massive mountain, simply enjoying their days.

Until it happened, and with no intention to disrupt,
One of the Labadings happened to look up.

He aspired to go higher,
and proclaimed, with great fire:
“If only we could reach that next plateau,
life would be even better. Up we must go!”

Many became convinced;
sold on the gold that if they suffered and endured,
future generations would enjoy life so much more.

So the Labadings stopped…

They stopped playing away their days and hours,
stopped swimming in rivers and cooling off in rain showers.
They stopped smelling flowers,
and began building towers.

Connected with rungs, the towers grew tall,
Every Labading worked, from the big to the small.
Soon, a ladder larger than you could fathom was there,
flying high in the sky and piercing the air.

And with each new rung, a bell was rung,
as the Labadings’ leaders praised the work being done.

Those ladder-building Labadings were always busy now.
Always busy building bigger, anyway and anyhow.

Up we must go.
Up we must go.
We are Labadings,
and up we must go!

Then the big day had finally come,
and they were oh so ready for relaxation and fun.
All the Labadings climbed the monstrosity they created…
the reward for all of the time they had traded.

They moved up to their new home, high atop the hill,
but, then again, it happened, and quickly quelled the thrill…

One of the Labadings happened to look up.

Before they could even enjoy their new place,
they saw an even higher plateau, way up in space.
So on that very same day, they made haste,
And began building a larger ladder, with no time to waste.

Up we must go.
Up we must go.
We are Labadings,
and up we must go!

This cycle recycled for a few thousand years;
Life plodded on with a purpose, yet not many cheers.

And despite some dissenters who resisted,
the leaders insisted…so the Labadings persisted.

Up we must go.
Up we must go.
We are Labadings,
and up we must go!

But during the last migration, the lengthiest yet,
They finally reached the limit of how large a ladder could get.
It was too much, just too much…the height and the weight.
And a single, loose screw sealed their society’s fate.

The ladder came down in a cataclysmic crash.
Thus, ending the Labading’s story in a flash.
Their ambition had them focused on reaching the sky,
But if you could ask them, not a one would clearly know why.

And the most tragic part wasn’t obliteration or destruction.
It was an entire race of beings blindly obeying instruction.
They never stopped to enjoy life, so right up to the “Great Fall”…
Every ladder-building Labading had missed the point of it all.

They missed out on their days, and missed out on the fun,
All because of a notion that there was work to be done.
So learn from the Labadings, be free from indenture.
Because what use is a destination, if you can’t enjoy the adventure?

Enjoy the journey, friends.
